Remember:

  • Anyone can buy gifts. Sorry. Not everyone can sell them.
  • A gift buyer is only as good as the gift merchandiser.
  • A good gift buyer is a person who asked the right questions.
  • Have an exit plan.
  • Know when to stop buying
  • Remember to add your freight cost!
  • Just because something cost less doesn't mean it will ship for less!
  • Document your success!
  • Discounting should be your last resort.
  • Give new life to an item by moving and remerchandising.
  • If you're not sure how to best merchandise an item, then DON'T buy it.
  • No rack or display is ever completely free.
  • Stay away from initial or custom name gift lines.
  • Creat a sign that sells the features, not the price.
  • Never place a price sticker on glass.
  • Use pricing string tags whenever possible.
  • Try to have your prices end with .50, .00 or 99.
  • If you double the cost and add freight you need to sell 50% of the gift line before you can start making money.
  • A true 60% margin is (cost divided by .40)
